This week I decided to do my current event on global warming. I chose this because lately I have been hearing a lot about global warming. So far, what I know about it is that the world is heating up and melting the glaciers, which is causing the ocean to rise and get colder. It is killing polar bears and other animals that live in areas with a cold climate and it is causing it to be cold in places like Vermont because the wind that comes from the north off the ocean is colder now because the ocean is so cold from the glaciers. Many people would agree that global warming is one of the biggest threats facing our planet today. The cause of global warming is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide. These gases trap the energy radiated back from earth retaining the heat and causing the earth to heat up. Greenhouse gases also cause global dimming. Global dimming is the opposite of global warming. With global dimming, the greenhouse gases cause the clouds to be whiter which causes them to let less of the sun's energy through and reflect most of it back making the earth cooler. For a long time major businesses and companies have put a lot of money and resources into hiding global warming because they were worried that if the truth came out about global warming they would be put out of business because no one would buy their product and or it would become illegal to use their factories that put off so many green house gasses. Now of course that the truth has come out, these businesses are concerned about the issue and are looking for regulation and direction. There are still a few companies though that are trying to undermine the situation. In conclusion, we have been covering up global warming for many years and trying to hide from it and pretend that it is not true, but now that the truth has come out, we need to work fast to be sure that we do not dig a deeper hole than we are already in.
I chose poverty as my current event because I feel that poverty is a major issue in many countries. The majority of people in the world are in poverty. For example almost half of the people in the world have to live on less than two dollars and fifty cents a day. That is over three billion people. One billion children are living in poverty right now, that is one in two children in the world. One child dies every 4 seconds. That is like a 2010 Haiti earthquake happening every 10 days. Even though it only cost less than one percent of what the world spends on weapons every year to put all of the worlds children in school by 2,000, it did not happen. Poverty also leads to health issues such as easily preventable illness and disease. Poor people can't afford the proper medication and could die from something as simple as a treatable cough or infection. Another health issue is hunger, which plays a huge role in poverty. If starvation could be healed worldwide, there would be a lot less casualties and a lot of countries would be completely changed. One reason that there are so many poor people in the world is that most global decision-making is made, or at least greatly influenced, by the rich, meaning that poor people are left out and the wealthier you are, the more these decisions will benefit you. There are many other reasons for poverty like lack of individual responsibility, or bad government policy. Inequality is probably the biggest though. Some even believe that high inequality will result in the increase of crime rates. In some places crime rates have already gone up due to inequality. In conclusion poverty is terrible and we have had so many chances to help turn it around but we have not taken advantage of many of them.http://www.globalissues.org/issue/2/causes-of-poverty
